The Evidence
Behind TPE.
We believe patients should be able to review the science for themselves. This page brings together the most important studies, clinical context, and research summaries on Therapeutic Plasma Exchange.
Featured Study
The AMBER Study.
A 347-person clinical trial of plasma exchange and cognitive decline.
AMBAR studied plasma exchange with albumin replacement in people with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers followed participants for 14 months and compared plasma exchange with a placebo procedure.
Patients who received plasma exchange declined more slowly than those in the placebo group.
Boada et al., Alzheimer’s & Dementia, 2020.
52%
less decline in daily living vs. placebo
61%
less decline in the moderate-stage group
Key Research.
Our picks of the most impactful studies on plasma exchange to date. TPE is an established medical procedure used clinically for decades. These studies explore its emerging role in cognitive health and healthy aging.
01 Plasma exchange and cognitive decline
AMBAR Study
One of the most important human studies of plasma exchange and cognition.
04 Plasma exchange and biological age
Turning Back the Clock on Aging
How plasma exchange may influence the processes connected to biological aging.
Research Focus Areas
What else are researchers studying?
AMBAR focused on Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers are also studying how plasma exchange may affect inflammation, biological aging, and how the body functions as we get older.
Cognitive Health
Studies like AMBAR explore whether plasma exchange may affect cognitive and functional decline.
Inflammation
Researchers are studying how TPE may affect inflammatory proteins and other substances carried in plasma.
Biological Aging
Some studies are looking at whether TPE may influence biomarkers associated with biological age.
Age-Related Function
Because plasma circulates throughout the body, researchers are studying whether changing plasma may affect more than one system.
